I have decided to raise money for a local charity, Orwell Mencap Genesis, which provides fantastic activities and services for young people and adults with learning and physical disabilities. This is a cause I feel passionate about, we are currently living in a time when resources are tight and services are often being cut for people with learning disabilities, particularly adults. Many resource centres have closed down including the one Abby used to attend.
Ten years ago, whilst I was trying to get my first job as a Physio, I worked as a support worker in a local residential home. It was then whilst supporting one of our service users, I experienced first hand the great service and variety of activities Genesis offer people with disabilities.
Orwell Mencap Genesis provides daytime support services, support in the home and community, domiciliary services, supported living and even a social club in the evening. They provide over 30 different activities including Zumba, Arts and Crafts, Creative Theatre, Sensory Rooms, Library and Bingo to name but a few! In addition they have social enterprise projects – Genesis Garden Furniture, the Green Bike project, soft fabric crafts, pottery and glass craft. These projects offer the chance to learn employment and life skills and experience working as a part of a team. It is vital that a great service like this continues to thrive.
The funds raised for this challenge will be supporting activity sessions at Orwell Mencap Genesis, be that developing new activities, supporting current activities, or enabling a service-user without the required funding to attend.
